Very Interesting!
What about "very"? This is something ESL students learn early on, but how often is it used? When and where is it used? I heard myself saying it, but only in the context of "You don't see that very often." That is, with "often" and in a negative sentence. Where have you heard "very"?

Someitmes I hear "really" when I might expect a student to use "very."

I didn't hear "very" on the BBC News Service broadcast until 20 minutes into the program, but then it was "very, very." When referring to the U.S. troop withdrawl in Iraq, the BBC's Washington correspondent said "rhetoric is getting very, very heated on both sides."

I listened to my colleage's lecture for 5-7 minutes and didn't hear him say "very". I did think I heard it, but like you Jim, it was "really". Then I listened for another 5-7 minutes after he was asked a question. During this discussion I heard it 3 times. "very significant" in relation to data. "very much like" other research. And "very big" variation. I guess it needed to be outside of his scripted talk.

To my surprise I did'nt hear it at all with the exception of my own use of it in class. I often say to the students that something is "muy Importante", but that's very important in Spanish. Even I didn't use it in English
